Alfred Wegener

In 1930 German Geophysicist and meteorologist Alfred Wegener (Best know for his contribution to the theory of continental drift) led an Expedition to Greenland. Funded by the German government the Wegener and his 14 participants set out to establish three permanents weather station that could measure the thickness of Greenland’s Ice sheet year round. Unbeknownst to his team Wegener had an ulterior motive for leading the exhibition. On previous exhibitions he had discovered traces and eventually the location of a great Viking ship trapped in the Greenland Ice. After installing the third weather station he sent all but one of his team back across the frozen planes of Greenland. With the help of young Rasmus Villumsen he attached gigantic weather balloons to the ship knowing the ship would be too much for the few remaining sled dogs. And so using the Two balloons a length of rope and Wegener’s knowledge of arctic winds the two managed to make it halfway between Eismitte and West camp when Wegener suffered from a heart attack and died. During the heart attack Wegener let go his grip on the rope and the Viking ship vanished into the white sky never to be seen again. Rasmus Villumsen, now on his own never made it back to camp..
